I put 2 coats of XTC primer and then 2 coats of XTC high temp paint (stainless steel) on my longtube headers. I recently seen that I need to bake them for 30 minutes to cure? Is that true, or do i not necessarily need to do that?

Hi - the specifications for the XTC primer are 1200 degrees maximum, but for the paint it is 1500 degrees. If you use a primer coat under the paint, is the maximum temperature reduced to 1200 degrees? Are there any problems with XTC paint adhering to bare metal cast iron manifold without primer? Thanks.

So i just painted my headers a few weeks back they looked awesome and after the first time letting it run to fill up my new radiator the paint started to bubble and then flake off. I did everything as the instructions said sandblasted, cleaned with reduced kbs cleaner, dried with compressed air, 2 light coats of aerosol primer, waited about 10hrs or more then 2 light coats of pure white, baked in a welding rod oven at 350 for half hour. I even took the precaution of letting them sit for a week before i put them on the motor and only ran it for a few seconds 2 or three times to give it a good heat cycle before i actually ran it. Primer looks fine under the paint, should i …

I've just had my T-bucket headers sandblasted and then used VHT flameproof primer, black and clear. They looked OK until I went through the cure process where the color faded and went quite matt. I've only just become aware of the XTC product. Can I apply XTC over the VHT with just a bit of scuffing ? While the headers near the engine get nice and hot, the sidepipes don't. Does the paint cure fully over time and does that have any implications for the situation above ? Steve.

Hey KBS, After I aerosol zinc sprayed the caliper with two coats, followed by two coats of jet black. With the 15-30 minutes in between. But when i placed it on a tray to put in the oven, the contact point kind of chipped the paint off after baking. Do you have any advice? Do you think the metal tray is transferring too much heat?

I am re-doing a pair of motorcycle mufflers that have some form of very hard, hi-temp factory coating that has lasted 18 years. Rather than strip them completely, I plan to rough the surface up (60-80 grit) and spray over it, since the original coating (whatever it is) has very strong adhesion. Here's my question: I am going to prime with the zinc XTC primer, then coat over that with XTC black, and then XTC clear over the black. Do I risk a too-thick coating that might peel or flake? Single coat of each, or is there the flexibility for 2 coats of each? Thank you very much.

I have a set of Heads on a Pontiac 400 motor that engine paint does not stay on the exhaust ports. I purchased some of your Pontiac Metallic Blue to try on them. I plan to Wire brush the exhaust pots well and clean with your KBS klean. Then foam brush a couple light coats of the Extream temp coating. Is there any thing else I should do. If this works and looks good, I will spread the news to the Pontiac community.

Due to a handling "error", I damaged the primer/color/clear on a section of exhaust. It has not been cured. Is it best to touch up then cure, or cure what is there and touch up? Am guessing re-spray before cure, but you guys know your product best! Thank you much!

Have been waiting for the local 'swap' meet in Carlisle to get some information and try this product for some quite time now. After prepping my manifolds, I opened the can and the bottom 1/3 was like peanut butter-almost impossible to mix. Is this can old? Is this normal? I read the on-line directions and nothing about this (says to have upside down prior to opening and mixing - which was done). Not too happy at the moment. This is the last step before my 440 is DONE..............

Finally opened up my XTC Primer and followed directions to shake it up and apply. paint was spitting all over the place. Had to wipe off the manifold once to clean the spit/ splatter off. tried shaking up the can some more and still the same. Cleaned nozzle no change. Tried the XTC Paint and it does the same thing ?? Am I missing something or doing something wrong ?!?

getting ready to Paint a 6 Cylinder Inline Exhaust Header for my 1929 I plan on Blasting the Manifold, KBS Clean the manifold, then 2 Coats of XTC Primer, 2 Coats of XTC Jet Black over the primer. My understanding is to prime, wait 30 minutes, prime, wait 30 minutes, paint, wait 30 minutes, paint. Doing each in a thin even coat over the entire exterior surface. How long after the last coat of XTC should I wait before heat curing ?? and can i do this on my standard gas grill or must be done in the oven ? My home oven is GAS. How long can I WAIT before i have to cure, can it sit for a few days, weeks, months before Heat Curing ??

I'm using your XTC paint on some headers and I'm trying to make it as durable as possible. I'm going to use two coats and then temperature cure. After this I was going to paint another coat thinking this might add some durability. Any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated.

I don't have a good grasp on when primer should be used. I will be coating a new pair of de-greased cast iron exhaust manifolds. Do I understand your instructions to say two coats of cast iron gray will suffice instead of one coat primer + one coat gray?

My husband has 2 into 1 exhaust pipes on his bike. He's having trouble finding paint that can stand the heat at the juncture. He has recently had it professionally ceramic coated but they only had black and he really wants red. It looks like your Rocket Red is exactly the color he's looking for. Would it be a problem to ulusevthe red on the pipes, given the situation? I'm not sure if they are aluminum or steel and I really want to surprise him so I don't want to ask him unless necessary. Thanks

Hello, I painted my brake calipers using XTC Primer and XTC Paint. I need to bake them in the oven now to cure the paint. Do you know if it's safe for the pistons, rubber seals, grease etc.. in the calipers to be exposed to such high temperatures? I'm worried that 350F for 30min could damage the piston seals. Thanks.

Hi, I'm looking for a low-emissivity finish for stainless steel at high temps (research application). XTC looks like it should do the trick - do you happen to have an emissivity number for the aluminum color? (it is in fact aluminum paint, not just metallic-colored, correct?) Any tips for painting stainless would be handy as well. Thank you!

I custom make large steel fire pits and have been using a Rustoleum product for clear coating the pits once they are free of any visible rust. Â It works okay, but I still get some surface spotting and over time I do believe it wears out. Â The big problem is that I can't cure this product because I don't have a large kiln. Â So, I wanted to see if there are any suggestions on high temp products I could use. Â Mainly clear and black. Â www.ssfirepits.com

Can the XTC be applied with a preval sprayer? I have the primer in a spray can, but the local store didn't have XTC in spray form, and I'm not really comfortable trying an hvlp for the first time on this project. Will thinning it 5% and applying it with the preval work?

Just wondering if I need to use the HI-temp Primer on my sandblasted wood stove prior to applying Hi-Temp "cast iron" paint? After all the primer is only resistant up to 1200 degrees where as the paint is good to 1500 degrees. What would be the best procedure for successfully painting a stove? Thanks

Can the various Hi-Temp paints be used over bare aluminum? Over anodized aluminum? Wish to repaint my motorcycle mufflers - scratched one, and sanded out the scratches - now need to pretty it up. Also, would I need to clearcoat afterwards to protect from UV, and is the clearcoat hi-temp resistant (the mufflers get quite hot, though certainly not 1500F!). Thanks!
