Making tank watertight

Featured Replies

Hi I am in the process of using one of your tank sealer kits. I have used the KBS strip to remove the old poor quality liner. I am trying to use the KBS clean now before I use the rust blast. The problem I have is sealing the tank up to wash the solution round. I 2 holes to seal up on the bottom 1 is for the fuel tap, the other for the fuel sender. I have tried ducktape, but it leaks :( what else can I use?

You can use corks to plug up the holes. Or you can put plastic over the holes and attached the plastic to the tank with duck tape that way the KBS Klean is mostly in contact with the plastic versus the adhesive from the duck tape. Please let us know if that helps and if you have any additional questions.

will give that a try. Thanks for your help. I am taking pictures before & after each stage to show the progress

Awesome! We would love to see those pictures. As always, please let us know if you have additional questions.

Some of the old liner still remains (the grey matter in the picture), tried more KBS strip, but it does not want to shift. I also used the jetwash on the insides today. Still in there. It seems it is bonded in there and is stuck very solid. I have had loads of chunks of old liner come out, but have a couple of spots in the bottom of the tank that I just cant seem to remove. As they are fixed in so firmly I was wondering if the new liner will still bond to the old remaining material? All I have left to do now is flash the tank with Rust Blast before I put in the new liner. IMG_1122_zps656259e6.jpg

The only thing I would suggest is try to remove the remaining old sealer with MEK. Then KBS Klean, RustBlast and Tank Sealer. Please let us know how that works for you.

MEK is Methyl Ethyl Ketone. It is a commonly available solvent that can be used to strip out some coatings. You should be able to find it at your local hardware store.

Cool, will try to find some at the weekend. I was about to use the rustblast when I noticed there was a couple of small patches left. I have used all the cleaning solution up, and don't really want to splash out on any more as I have spent quite alot on all the products already. Can I use the MEK , rinse then go to the rust blast?

This is just some of the rubbish that has come out null_zps73697d3e.jpgnull_zpscac4229d.jpg what liner would this have been, and is the previously mentioned chemical gonna be the best?

We are not sure what old sealer that is. But, it is great that you got it out.

At this point, clean the Tank with KBS Klean, etch with RustBlast and then proceed to the Tank Sealing Step. Please let us know how that goes for you and if you have any additional questions.

so I don't need to worry about the last stubborn bits that are left in? Seem to be stuck in there for good

If you can't get them out, then proceed with the KBS 3 Step Tank Sealing System. The Tank Sealer should be able to bite into those stubborn paint areas.

Great. I've tried getting a long screwdriver in to lift or shift the stuck bits, but no luck. Will now proceed with the rust blast then the sealer (i have already run the KBS clean through).

After tank sealer: null_zpsa3f5f900.jpgnull_zps159b013e.jpg

I followed the instructions to the T for the tank sealer, but it seems there ot enough paint to go round as there a a few exposed areas as can be seen. Do I need to get an extra can of sealant to run round again to catch the bits that were missed?

The cured Tank Sealer needs to be scuffed so an additional coat of Tank Sealer can stick to it. As long as you can do that, you can apply some more Tank Sealer. We have also had customers roll Fusion Self-Etch Primer around in the tank to etch the cured Tank Sealer and then put in another coat of Tank Sealer.

In the instructions it said to use the included fabric/mesh along with the selant here it is done: null_zpsa8844e7d.jpg

Sounds good. Pinholes, small holes, and weak areas can be reinforced with BackBone. For larger holes, it is a good idea to use NuMetal Epoxy Putty.
