Are you looking to coat the inside of the tank or the outside of the tank?

 

Where is the powdercoating? Outside of the tank?

Its powder coated inside and out. I'm looking only to seal the seams at the bottom where the tank joins the base plate.

For a powder coated surface, lightly scuff with 300 grit and then clean well with KBS Klean, rinse, and let dry.

 

Then apply RustSeal. Always thin coats and at least two coats.

Hmm, Rust seal over tank sealer. Please clarify why this product is better for this application over tank sealant I used on the first tender.

Because you are looking to "seal the seams at the bottom" of the exterior of the tank, we recommend RustSeal because it is designed to be brushed on versus Tank Sealer, which is formulated to be rolled around and drained from the inside of a tank (where it is not feasible to brush).

 

Tank Sealer and RustSeal are the same base formulation with the main differences being pigment load and viscosity. RustSeal is more heavily loaded with pigments and Tank Sealer is thinner making Tank Sealer perform better for applications inside a tank.

Ok, actually its the inside of the tank I would be sealing the seams. Refer to page one of the thread to get a better ideal of what I am talking about. Also note there there will be non coated SS rivets at the seam.

For the inside of a tank, you will use Tank Sealer.

So do I still need too sand the seams with the sealer. Also because I am just doing the seams inside, will the rust seal also work?

Just too confirm the tank will be filled with water when in use?  How long between coats do I wait? Does it matter what color I use as safety blue would allow me to see where I apply it better than black?

Re-coating RustSeal can be done once the first or consecutive coat is dry-to-touch and does not leave a fingerprint which is typically within 2-6 hours depending on temperature and humidity. This timeframe may be longer on the inside of a tank because of the lack of airflow.

Can any other grit sand paper be used? I have 220 and 400, no 300. How big of a gap can rust seal fill?

Yes, 220 or 400 will absolutely get the job done. RustSeal cures to .002" (2 mils) per coat which is the size gap RustSeal filles.

 

Always apply RustSeal in THIN coats and never medium or heavy coats. That is key.
