Jason Kendall
I have a Yakima roof basket and it’s fading and developing surface rust. What product would you recommend to fix this to make it last?
KBS Coatings
Surfaces like that are easiest to restore/coat if you can spray. Do you have spray equipment, or would you rather brush and possibly utilize aerosol products that we offer? We are looking forward to your reply and assisting you further. Jason Kendall
I don’t have any spray equipment so I’m looking for either a spray paint or brush on is fine just want it to look professional and hold up to the weather here. KBS Coatings
Sounds good. We can surely work with that. Do you want a glossy or satin black finish?
Jason Kendall
I prefer satin look!
KBS Coatings
Sounds good. Here is the process. 1) Clean the surfaces with KBS Klean and a green scotch brite pad. 2) Etch any bare metal or rusty spots with RustBlast. 3) Prime/Seal the surfaces with RustSeal. 4) Topcoat with BlackTop which comes in Satin Black. BlackTop comes in a brush on or an aerosol. BlackTop is 100% UV stable and an excellent, durable exterior coating. Please be sure to check out the RustSeal Directions and the BlackTop Directions. Let us know if that helps and if you have any additional questions.
Jason Kendall
How many spray cans of each would you suggest I buy? The rack is 64” x 39” wide. Thanks!
KBS Coatings
You should be good with the Large System Sampler Kit and two BlackTop Aerosol. Let us know if that helps and if you have any additional questions.
Jason Kendall
Awesome and the rust seal should be easy enough to brush on? Won’t look crappy?
KBS Coatings
Yes, RustSeal brushes on perfectly and looks like powder coating (but much more durable).

Jason Kendall
One more question. I’m having the basket sand blasted. Once I get back do I still have to clean and blast or can I just seal and top coat?
KBS Coatings
If new (not recycled) sand is being used and it is handled with gloved hands after sandblasting, you do not need to do the KBS Klean and RustBlast steps. You can proceed straight to the RustSeal step. Please let us know if that helps and if you have any additional questions.
Jason Kendall
I got the backet back from sandblasting and decided to do the whole process. After I was completed with rust blast I’ve noticed the basket has immediately started to rust. Is it ok to paint rust sealer over that?
KBS Coatings
Yes, that typically happens when you apply RustBlast over sandblasted steel. As long as it is some slight surface rust which has mixed with the zinc phosphate, which is white in color, then you are good to proceed to the RustSeal step. If it is more than a dusting, take a clean scotch brite pad dipped in water and rub the surface and dry immediately with a clean towel. Please let us know if that helps and if you have any additional questions.
Jason Kendall
Awesome. It looks to be just a dusting so I’ll coat over it as is! Thanks!! I’ll report back shortly!!!

Jason Kendall
It’s very humid here today. After I’m done with the final coat would it be ok to open the garage door and allow it to better cure in the humidity?
KBS Coatings
Yes, after the flow out, you can utilize the humidity (and some air flow) to cure the BlackTop. It looks so good! Nice work.
