Den
On a vintage car with rear cycle mudguards I have just cleaned to bare metal as much as possible for a rough rust pitted surface with welded in patches. I then gave 2 coats of Bilt Hamber Hydrate 80 rust converter to convert any rust in pitted area. Then cleaned over with KBS clean (wipe over with sponge as not possible to wash with running water) followed by 2 coats RustSeal. As that area is not covered by mudguards (fenders) and the wheels are spoked wire wheels the area will be exposed to sun. I intend to brush on an anti-stone chip paint on top of the RustSeal to UV proof and act as extra protection. What is maximum time after RustSeal has cured that I can leave before applying the stone chip paint by brush and without having to go through the extra process of scuffing or getting Fusion Self Etch Primer? I am a bit bemused by time these processes take; by the time you apply RustSeal first coat, let cure to no finger mark, apply second coat, and let cure to no finger mark it would be late in evening and I would be working well into night to get a top coat anti UV on - bear in mind there are 2 sides to car. It is about 17 hours after finishing 2nd coat RustSeal to the next day before I would be ready to apply stone chip . Is this ok? DSCF1529 showing treated with Hydrate 80 rust cure. Den
No reply yet to "is this ok?" Further questions. 1. Fusion self etch over Cured RustSeal. "Apply a dust coating".....do not quite understand what is meant by this. I have tin of fusion which will be applied by brush. 2. SCUFF the cured RustSeal. Please can you explain SCUFF - is it just a gentle wipe over with the 300 to 400 sandpaper or does all shininess have to be removed to leave a matt surface? Yes, if you give the surface coated with RustSeal a slight scuff with 320 grit. Quote Fusion self etch over Cured RustSeal. "Apply a dust coating".....do not quite understand what is meant by this. Take a green scotch brite pad (or similar) and gently rub the surface with cured RustSeal. This should be a light rub and not a full-on sanding. You are simply knocking down the sheen, so you get good adhesion with the next coating.
