Sealing Motorcycle Gas Tank - How to protect Paint?

I have the 3 part sealing kit but I'm concerned about damaging paint on the outside of the tank.  Will the cleaner and rust remover damage paint?  Is there anyway to protect paint from spilling of the sealer?  (in case of operator error)  Would wrapping the tank in plastic food wrap help?  Are the any recommended precautions to avoid an oops?  Thanks

What most people take some heavy plastic and tape it to the inside of the filler hole and then drape the plastic over the entire outside of the tank.
