Rvelazquez45 Posted September 13, 2020 Report Posted September 13, 2020 Would it be effective to apply Rust Seal over Rustoleum Rust Reformer, or any rust reformer for that matter? I have rust at the bottoms of my car door seams and would like to remove the rust with rust reformer and then apply rust seaI and then KBS Clear Diamond Finish. I don’t have a garage to work in so the complete KBS system would be difficult to implement. Quote
KBS Coatings Posted September 13, 2020 Report Posted September 13, 2020 Yes, you can apply RustSeal over fully cured Rust Reformer that has been scuffed up slightly with 300 grit. We recommend a solid color top coat over RustSeal when the RustSeal will be exposed to sunlight on a consistent basis. We do not recommend a clear coat (like DiamondFinish Clear) over RustSeal. For car door seams, most people would coat over the RustSeal with touch up paint from your car dealer. Please let us know if that helps and if you have any additional questions. Quote
Rvelazquez45 Posted September 13, 2020 Author Report Posted September 13, 2020 This definitely helps. Thanks! Do you recommend any particular preparation to the rust seal, other than the scuffing, before applying the solid color over it? Quote
Rvelazquez45 Posted September 13, 2020 Author Report Posted September 13, 2020 Also, once I paint over the rust seal, is the clear diamond finish over the solid color a good idea? Quote
KBS Coatings Posted September 14, 2020 Report Posted September 14, 2020 As long as the surface is still clean, simply scuff with 300 grit. That is all you need to do and the solid color top coat will adhere very well. Please let us know if that helps and if you have any other questions. Quote
Rvelazquez45 Posted September 14, 2020 Author Report Posted September 14, 2020 Many thanks for the continued answers. Also, I had one more question. Once I paint over the rust seal, is the clear diamond finish over the solid color a good idea? Quote
KBS Coatings Posted September 14, 2020 Report Posted September 14, 2020 Yes, you can put DiamondFinish Clear over a fully cured UV stable solid color top coat. This adds gloss and durability. Please let us know if that helps and if you have any additional questions. Quote
Rvelazquez45 Posted September 22, 2020 Author Report Posted September 22, 2020 That definitely helps. I have another question. If I am not able to apply the rust reformer on the same day as I apply the KBS Rust Blast, do you have any suggestion s on how I should prep the area before I apply the rust reformer? Quote
KBS Coatings Posted September 22, 2020 Report Posted September 22, 2020 As long as the surface stays clean out of the elements, you do not need to do any prep when apply another coating over a surface that has been etch with RustBlast. Please let us know of that helps and if you have any other questions. Quote
Rvelazquez45 Posted September 25, 2020 Author Report Posted September 25, 2020 What would be the best way to prevent Rust Reformer from getting on the outside of my car door while I apply it to the inner lower door seam? Quote
KBS Coatings Posted September 25, 2020 Report Posted September 25, 2020 It is always best to mask off areas you do not want coated when painting. Hopefully that helps. Please reach out if you have any additional questions. Quote
Rvelazquez45 Posted September 26, 2020 Author Report Posted September 26, 2020 Thank you. I taped off the outside door and applied rust reformer to the inside lower door seam. When I removed the tape I noticed that some rust reformer still got to the outside door. I used KBS #1 Thinner to remove the rust reformer from the outside door. Was that wise? Would this damage the paint on the outside door? Quote
KBS Coatings Posted September 26, 2020 Report Posted September 26, 2020 We have not tested KBS #1 Thinner for wiping fully cured coatings (as this is not what it was designed for) but in general, KBS #1 Thinner should not damaged fully cured coatings. Please let us know if you have any additional questions. Quote
