Can I just paint it with just the coater or do I need to do the whole process? February 23, 20206 yr comment_5018 If the paint on the transmission case is glossy (shiny), scuff with 300 grit. If the paint on the transmission case is matte or flat, you can still scuff it but it is not as critical. After that, assuming the transmission case has been cleaned very well with a water based cleaner, you can apply the Motor Coater.
