I just bought a 2016 GMC Sierra and the frame has what appears to be a factory rubberized or wax coating on the frame.  This coating is peeling off along many of the edges and welds but is in good shape elsewhere.  Must all of this coating be removed or stripped prior to using the klean/blast/seal method or can I just remove the loose/peeling parts and klean/blast/seal over the rest?  Any experience?  Thanks!

It is always best practice to remove the old paint so RustSeal can go down on a prepped bare surface. That said, if the factory coating (meaning not a waxy film) is still adhered really well, you can scuff up the previous coating with 300 grit, clean the surface with KBS Klean and then apply RustSeal over that.

The problem is that it's not really scuffable or sandable since it's rubberized - it will just kind of smear around.  The process of removing all of this would simply be impossible.  Hopefully your product will at least leach into where the rust has set in on the edges and get a decent bond to the rest - it's pretty much my only option at this point.  Thanks for the reply.

OK. For a rubber coating (flat and not glossy), clean well with KBS Klean and then apply RustSeal in thin coats and 3-6 hours between coats depending on temperature and humidity.

Hey, I actually have the same exact question.  I am surprised of the response you got, it really didn't answer the issue.   Did you ever get a better answer? How did you get the wax coating off? 

 

I just got the kit and I want to be sure before I crawl under my truck and start.

Most waxy frame coatings from the manufacturer can be removed with Mineral Spirits or Acetone. After you have done that, pressure wash the frame to be sure you have gotten rid of it all.

 

After that, do the KBS 3-Step Rust Prevention System.
