We normally use duct tape and/or electrical tape with some various rubber plugs we've found over time. As far as the threads, after prepping everything, wipe some WD-40 or oil on the threads, and even if the seal should get on them, the sealer will peel off. Any solvent will remove the sealer before it cures, but after that...nothing will touch it.
