If you have freshly sandblast steel where fresh sand (not recycled) and gloved hands (no finger oils) were used, you can simply apply BlackTop straight to that surface. Most people put RustSeal to the sandblasted steel and then BlackTop over the RustSeal for the longest lasting rust prevention system but BlackTop will adhere very well to sandblasted steel.

BlackTop is used all of the time on running boards and is ideal. This is a very common application.

Please let us know if that helps you and if you have any additional questions.

Thank you,

I ordered a gallon of Rust Seal and a gallon of Black Top.  I am working on a 1950 Ford F-2, and plan to use this on all the frame/suspension, inner fenders, running boards, etc.

Would there be any issues applying the Rust Seal with a brush, and then spraying the Black Top over it?

No, you can brush RustSeal (brush marks flow out beautifully) and then spray the BlackTop.

There are three effective ways to topcoat RustSeal (with BlackTop, KBS Top Coater, KBS MAXX or other solid color top coat paints) effectively so that the coatings bond and fuse together. Please choose the one that works for your project.

1) Apply your top coat once the second or final coat of RustSeal is dry-to-the-touch and does not leave a fingerprint (usually 3-6 hours depending on temperature and humidity).

2) Let the second or final coat of RustSeal fully cure (at least 24 hours), scuff the RustSeal with 320 grit, then apply your top coat.

3) Let the second or final coat of RustSeal fully cure (at least 24 hours), dust the RustSeal with Fusion Self-Etching Primer, let the Fusion cure for 30 minutes, then apply your top coat.

Please let us know if you have any additional questions.
